A long-lasting barrier against mosquitoes
Bistar 8%SC is FMC's bifenthrin insecticide (7.8% w/w), formulated as a water-based suspension concentrate. It is registered by NEA for the control of mosquitoes, cockroaches, flies and rat fleas. It is made for outdoor mosquito barrier treatments: you spray the foliage and surfaces where adult mosquitoes rest, and the treated band keeps working long after the job is done.
Why it works
Bistar targets adult mosquitoes where they rest and land: in vegetation, under decks and in shaded spots. Because it does not repel them, mosquitoes keep landing on treated surfaces. In FMC's tests they stayed on bifenthrin-treated surfaces up to 7.6 times longer than on other pyrethroids, which gives each one time to pick up a lethal dose.
The active ingredient is stable in rain and sunlight and has low solubility in water, so the deposit stays where you put it. FMC's internal studies show residual control of up to 6 months. Results vary with mosquito species, surface and site.
Easy on the people around it
Bistar is water-based, so it is odourless, non-irritating and free of plant-damaging solvents. It does not harm plants and leaves no unsightly residue; once dry, it is virtually impossible to tell where it was sprayed. That means fewer complaints from homeowners, residents and your own applicators.
How to use
Dilute 65–125 mL in 10 L of water (1:80 at the higher rate). Apply as a coarse spray at 1 L of solution per 20 m² on non-porous surfaces and 1 L per 10 m² on porous surfaces, without spraying past the point of run-off. Use the higher rate when pest pressure is high, and the lower rate for follow-up treatments.
For a mosquito barrier, treat where adults rest: in and under foliage, under decks and soffits, and around the perimeter of homes and buildings. Apply with a tank, backpack or ground sprayer, or a blower/mister, at a droplet size above 50 µm. Keep spray away from ponds and waterways, as bifenthrin is highly toxic to fish.
Where it fits
Combine Bistar with removing breeding sites and larviciding for a complete mosquito programme. It suits homes and condominiums, parks, schools, recreation areas, and commercial and industrial buildings. It is also a quick way to reduce adult mosquitoes before an outdoor event.
